There is a reason a lot of us feel less confident in ourselves as compared to others. Lack of confidence for me has always been the fact that I live too much inside my head.

I over analyse everything and over think all the time which leads to lack of confidence in myself.

Over the years, I have realised that the secret to being more confident in yourself is to not think too much and do as much as you can to improve yourself.

As long as you do that, there is no reason to constantly feel bad about yourself and think that you are lacking.

If you want to know how to be more confident in yourself, you have to know the signs of low self confidence.

The signs are not always obvious but it is important to know them. Some of the signs of low self confidence are :-

  1. Constant self-doubt and worry.
  2. Inability to set and enforce boundaries.
  3. Always trying to please other people.
  4. Lot of negative self talk.
  5. Being constantly apologetic.
  6. Seeking validation from others.
  7. Difficulty prioritising your own needs and wants.

If you show any of these signs, you need to work on your confidence and self esteem. It is not easy but it’s something worth working towards.

I will be listing down what has helped me gain more confidence in myself.

These tips are simple but they are not easy to follow.

1. Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

It is definitely unfair that some people have talent, looks, money and other privileges that not everyone else has. It can be frustrating to think about but it’s really unhelpful to compare yourself and your life to other people’s life.

Instead of that, you can work hard on being the best version of yourself so that you know you have done what you can to achieve your dream life, even if it doesn’t come easy to you.

Chances are you will end up achieving a lot more than you expect to with all that effort.

Avoid following people on social media who make you feel bad about yourself and who you constantly find yourself comparing your life to.

Instead follow motivational people and someone who makes you strive to achieve more in life or just be happy with who you are.

2. Note Down Your Strengths

We all have good qualities in us that we overlook when we have lack of self esteem or confidence. The one way you can learn how to be confident in yourself is by noting things down about yourself that make you happy. This can serve as an ego boost to you whenever you read this list.

Writing down things about yourself can also help you reflect on what you have and what you want in life. It has been proven useful to a lot of people to remind themselves of their strengths and feel good when they feel down.

Keep a daily journal if you can and note down good things about yourself every time you feel like you don’t have confidence and watch it grow.

3. Work On Your Weaknesses

Just like we all have strengths, we all have weaknesses as well. It is just as important to know where you lack and work on it to be a better version of yourself.

Note down what areas in your life you can improve upon and work hard on it. This will give you a sense of purpose which will be a great way to increase your confidence.

Make sure that you are not too harsh on yourself when you are noting these things down. There are some things that we can’t change and should accept about ourselves no matter what anyone says.

4. Stand Up For Yourself

Having self respect is important if you want to know how to be confident in yourself. It is easy to keep quiet if people walk all over you and treat you like a doormat, especially if they are friends or family. It’s very tempting to let it go to avoid confrontation or losing a close person.

However, this people pleasing behavior can lead to low self confidence. If you surround yourself with people who talk down to you, you are not going to feel very good about yourself.

Even if the person making fun of you or talking down to you is not a close friend, you shouldn’t let anyone disrespect you.

Practice standing up for yourself when necessary and stay true to who you are. This will help you respect yourself more and keep your head high.

5. Take Care Of Your Mind And Body

Taking care of your physical and mental health is a great way to boost confidence and feel better about yourself. It’s a good idea to get into good habits and do more of what makes you happy. Some of these habits are :-

  • Exercise everyday for at least 30 minutes to keep your mind and body healthy.
  • Keep a daily journal to note down your thoughts, feelings and goals.
  • Meditate for 15 minutes everyday by sitting down and focusing on your breath.
  • Eat healthy meals and watch your junk food intake.
  • Don’t avoid going to the doctor or talking to a therapist when needed.
  • Get 8 hours of good quality sleep everyday to stay fresh and sharp.
  • Drink lots of water every day.

These habits will help you stay mentally and physically healthy which means that you will feel great about yourself. This translates to better self esteem and higher confidence.

6. Repeat Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are a great way to get rid of self doubt and program your mind into thinking you are deserving of happiness and love.

Every single day, repeat positive affirmations to yourself or write them down in a notebook. Better yet, set a time everyday when you look in the mirror and repeat these words to yourself. Some positive affirmations for boosting self confidence are :-

  • I am happy with who I am and who I want to be.
  • I am the creator of my life and destiny.
  • I believe in myself.
  • I will continue to learn and grow.
  • I am confident in who I am.
  • I am deserving of happiness and kindness.

Saying positive affirmations everyday has been proven to be useful when you pair them with thinking positively. So incorporate affirmations into your daily routine and you will see your confidence rise.

7. Be Who You Are Unapologetically

Being who you are and not trying to be someone else is a great way to start increasing your confidence. It is easier to be authentic and you don’t have to worry about people liking you when you like yourself.

Find out what you like and what makes you happy and do more of that. Be friends with people who accept you unconditionally and get rid of those who don’t without any guilt.

Dress the way you want or choose the career of your dreams without letting anyone put you down. Make you are true to yourself and accept different parts of you as you grow and develop with time.

As long as you are not hurting anyone, you don’t have to apologize for who you are and what you do with your life.
